Weather conditions at a jobsite – hot or cold, windy or calm, dry or humid – may be vastly different from the optimum conditions assumed at the time a concrete mix is specified, designed, or selected – or from laboratory conditions in which concrete specimens are stored and tested.
We prep the concrete a couple ways. Either by lightly grinding the concrete or by pressure washing it. Sometimes both! On this one we used a 5" diamond grinder/with vacuum attached, and removed all the loose concrete. We ended up grinding the entire surface to get back down to the good concrete. About 1/8" of the surface was removed.
The concrete surface should be smooth, clean and dry. Ant loose particles should be rubbed off from the concrete surface with a grinding wheel or stone, before hammer testing. Rebound hammer test should not be conducted on rough surfaces as a result of incomplete compaction, loss of grout, spalled or tooled concrete surface.
The existing surface may be lightweight or dense portland cement concrete, asphaltic concrete (AC), steel, stone, wood or composite combinations of these materials.
